A Brief Look at the History of Mining in Arizona

Arizona MiningArizona has been one of the best mining areas in North America since it was first discovered.  In fact, Europeans first came to Arizona searching for new places to dig for silver and gold in the 1860’s.  When mining hit its prime, one fourth of Arizona’s residents were working miners or prospectors.  They great land didn’t disappoint with many precious minerals being discovered over the next 100 years, from copper to cold and even a few precious gems as well.  The wealth created by the mining industry is what shaped the backbone for Arizona as a state.  Today, the economy still relies heavily on working mines for support.  Of the many mines that have been established over time, here are a two of the most interesting projects that left a mark on Arizona’s history.

The Patagonia Mine

The Patagonia Mine was originally known as the Mowry Mine.  It was renamed in 1860 when Sylvester Mowry proudly purchased the property.  Unfortunately, his operating years were numbered due to his political views.  As a sympathizer to the Confederates, he was arrested as the Civil War was in its hay day.  He went to prison and the Union took his mine.  When he was released from prison, Mowry took his case to court demanding 1.1 million dollars for the illegal seizure of his property.  Unfortunately, his case was unsuccessful and he never retrieved his property or the money he hoped to gain.  The Mowry Mine is historically known as being a place of great conflict.  One of Arizona’s favorite legends is about the murders of multiple mining leaders in this very spot.  According to stories, the Apaches were displeased with European occupation of their land and took revenge at the mines.

The Bisbee Mines

Bisbee was one of the mining capitals during the 1800’s with multiple mines having great success.  One of the most noted operations was the Copper Queen, home to an underground mining tunnel and a regular pit style mine.  An electric train was used to transport equipment and carry the minerals.  Today, you can still see this old train on display at the Bisbee Museum.

Both of these mines played an intricate role in the successful evolution of the mining industry in Arizona.  When you visit the area, you can browse through museums and see real artifacts depicting detailed accounts of the stories that unfolded in these historic mines.

Exploring the Billion Dollar Copper Town

Rough CopperJerome, Arizona is one of the most historic landmarks in the state once known as the “Billion Dollar Copper Town”.  The city is perched on Cleopatra Hill, overlooking the cities situated below with an amazing view at over 5,000 feet.  Jerome was originally settled as a camp for copper miners and it gradually grew into community as people exchanged their tents for homes and businesses.  The city was officially founded in 1876.  Despite being known as the “wicked town” in the west, it was the fourth largest city throughout the entire territory.

By the time the 1920’s arrived, Jerome was home to more than 15,000 people.  Unfortunately, the Depression changed it all ten years later when the mining business slowed to a halt.  It picked up again for a brief period during World War II as more copper was needed by the military, but it slowed again and eventually closed in 1953.  By this time, only around 75 people remained in Jerome and they transformed the abandoned mining community into a historic district by proclaiming it as a ghost town.

Today, Jerome is home to less than 500 people and it is still thriving on the tourists that visit throughout the year.  Seated above the most historic copper mine in the state, people all over the world travel to tour the biggest ghost town ever preserved.  The people who live and work in Jerome are an eclectic blend of history buffs and artists, preserving the old buildings with few changes and offering tourists a plethora of museums, gift shops, and craft markets.

Modern Jerome is much the same as it was in late 1890’s.  The buildings that were dilapidated and falling have been restored to authenticity.  The city is settled on a 30 degree slope, making it a place to take unforgettable photos.  The most popular tourist attraction is the Cribs District, which was once the center of the “wicked” lifestyles.  You can still tour the back alleys where people could visit “Prostitution Row”.

During your next trip to Arizona, make it a point to stop through beautiful Jerome.  Take in the majestic mountain views and tour the historic ghost town.  It is a great way for children to get a real look at what life was like at the turn of the century and they can learn more about Arizona’s mining industry as well.

A Million Dollar Business

You may think that mining cannot be profitable anymore but you are wrong. Mining is still profitable. Global mining firms earned record profits last year. Leading the $133 billion profit was iron ore. Iron ore is the most profitable commodity at this time. Iron ore’s revenue rocked to 42% from 20%.

The Vancouver Company, Energold Drilling Corp has had in increase of 142% in revenues over the last couple of years. This is due to drilling 585,800 meters for mineral, that is an increase of 69%. This company drills in areas all over the globe. Mostly they drill in South America and Mexico and expect the demand for drilling to continue throughout 2012.

West Africa gold miner, Semafo had a great first quarter this year. The Semafo, Montreal based company sold gold 22 % higher than last year, giving them an increased net income of $31.5 million, 54% higher than last year.

Last year coal and diamond mining for Anglo American reported huge profits. The $13.3 billion earning was a record for the company. The increase allowed the miner to take a greater stake in the De Beers diamond business. Also mining in iron ore and manganese was up 23% as well for Anglo.

As you can see, mining is still very profitable. Just like with all businesses there are ups and downs. Finding that sweet moneymaking spot may be here today and gone tomorrow but for the iron ore and gold it’s an impressive time. Increases in profits and higher than normal forecasts show that this isn’t the beginning of the end but an exciting time for these companies. Getting covered in soot in a cold damp cave is only part of the profit building business of mining.

A Visit To A Colonial Mining Town

If you are looking for a unique way to spend a family vacation you may want to consider a trip to one of the many former mining towns of the Southwest. Many of these towns are known as ghost towns because very little remains of the town except for the shells and foundations of buildings that were once full of miners looking to find their fortune. A number of these towns have been turned into vacation resorts and amusement parks of sorts, offering a unique opportunity to experience a bit of life as it was centuries ago.

What can you expect to do on a trip to one of these former mining towns? Many of these towns feature some of the activities that initially drew so many to them in the first place. Some allow visitors to pan for gold or tour old gold mines. One of the big features of almost every mining town is an extensive set of railroad tracks, and many of these trains have been restored and provide visitors with a scenic trip through the town.

The Old West has much to offer in the way of family adventures. You may consider a wagon train trip to see what life was like for the first pioneers in this country. Another great plus of these kinds of trips is that they are usually relatively inexpensive compared to other kinds of family vacations, and they offer a great deal of educational benefits. A quick search on the Internet will pull up a number of mining towns that have been restored for visitors. Why not start planning a trip to one for your family today?

Teaching Kids About Mining

If you are a homeschooling mom, lessons about the mining industry might not be on your current lesson plans… but they should! Mining is a fascinating industry and learning about it can open doors to “dig deeper” (no pun intended!) into geology, history, and economics. So how can you teach children about mining? Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

1. Take a Field Trip

The best way for kids to learn about mining is to see the operation up close. Many coal mines will allow you to tour the area with a special guide who can customize the information according to the ages and grades of your children. Your kids can see the equipment, touch the coal, and actually experience what it feels like to be down inside the cool, dark mines.

2. Start a Rock Collection

Part of mining is digging deep beneath the surface of the earth’s crust. As you teach about the various layers of the earth, you can introduce a variety of different rock formations. This is a great time to suggest that your kid start a rock collection. Create a diagram or a special book that shows pictures and descriptions of 15-20 different rocks. Then help your child search for as many of them as possible. You can label them and display them in a shadow box when you are finished.

3. Interview a Miner

To incorporate language arts into your mining lessons, arrange for your children to interview a miner. You can do this in person during your field trip or by phone if the field trip isn’t possible. Your child can then write a report about the interview and what he or she learned from the miner.

Just Wasting Time

“Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, watching the clouds roll away…” That is one of my favorite songs. When I was a kid I loved going to the beach. It was magical. We lived about 5 hours away so we didn’t go often. But when we did it was like a whole different world. It was a world with boats and planes and sand and sun and bikinis. It was every boy’s dream. As I got older I started to dream more and what I dreamed about was being able to sit on the dock, fish all day and not have a care in the world. Is it possible?

I can’t speak for you but in my case it is. Now pay close attention because this is so simple that you might just miss it. I am 37 years old. I have a house at the coast, in the mountains and on the river. I have 6 cars, 3 boats, 4 kids and 1 wife! And I haven’t worked in 12 years. Neither has my bride. Now I know what your thinking. I must be one of those trust fund babies. Wrong. I am an internet business expert. It took some time and it cost some money. I made a few mistakes along the way as well. But what I have learned is that it is super easy to make money. The difficult thing is getting people to believe that.

Twelve years ago I started playing online games at UK Bingo sites. One thing led to another and after reading the xbingo review, I decided to sign up for memberships at a few sites. I joined LandmarkBingo and Bet 365 Bingo. I won a few times here and there but it wasn’t that great. Then one day I finally joined SkyBingo and I hit the jackpot. That changed everything. From then on I was retired and I was hooked on the games. Since then I have gone on to start my own online games. But I still play bingo. And I still win… almost daily.

The trick to making money is not working hard but working smart. The vast majority of people are making someone else rich. Why not make yourself rich. It is possible. Online games offer some of the largest payouts. I have hit 18 jackpots in the last 12 years. None of them have been less than 300,000. You do the math. It works! But I don’t. I am living the dream. Sitting on the dock and fishing away. What keeps you from trying it?

A Degree in the Mining Field Won’t Be Wasted

One of the problems that many of the students who are getting ready to graduate from high school face knows that the job market once they complete college might not be better than it is right now. As a result these students are thinking less about what their dream job would be, and more about what fields are going to be hiring once they have a college degree. One of the fields that today’s high school student should consider is something in the mining and mineral field. There are two reasons that this would be a good career choice.

Right now there is a shortage of people who are qualified to work in the mining and mineral field. Employers in the industry are being forced to hire people who really aren’t qualified for the job, as of right now it doesn’t look like there are enough students enrolled in the field to fill the demand.

The other reason the mining and mineral field is a sound choice is the startup salary. The average student who graduates with a mining and mineral Bachelor of Science degree can realistically expect earn a starting salary of about $65,000. There are only two other fields that have a higher average startup salary. Even though advanced degrees aren’t needed to work in the field, many people go back to get them because it drastically improve their earning potential, and sometimes the employer is even willing to help with tuition.

Many of the people who are starting to enter this area of study find that they can complete most of their educational requirements online which means they don’t have to worry about adding the high cost of student housing to their student loans.

Why Saunas are Growing in Popularity

Many people have never stepped into a sauna, much less considered installing in home saunas. Many saunas are found in health clubs, spas, and locker rooms for athletes. A sauna is a room or house that is designed to put out wet or dry heat sessions. These sessions induce relaxation and sweating. The items, like the benches and walls in a sauna stay dry but are still warm. Many people use saunas after a long workout or a vigorous run. Usually a session in a sauna should not exceed more than fifteen to twenty minutes due to the amount people sweat which can lead to dehydration.

In home saunas, much like Jacuzzi tubs and other whirlpools are beginning to hit the personal market. People are putting saunas in their homes or in their backyards. Many doctors feel that spending regular sessions in a sauna can detoxify, or rid the body of toxins. Some people feel that this is essential to them staying healthy and strong. There are also some doctors and personal trainers that feel saunas are good way to achieve weight loss.

Most of the weight loss that comes with spending time in a sauna or jetted bath tubs would be water weight and easily put back on. At spa facilities, saunas are seen as a relaxation room. It is usually quiet, warm, and cleansing. Many people wrap up in a towel and go in for their session. Because people are seeing the positive effects of saunas, they are being purchased for personal use, especially in climates that are extremely cold and stay cold a majority of the time. Sometimes in those areas, these saunas are called “snow rooms”. Imagine being out in the snow all day and walking into a sauna where the temperatures can be anywhere from seventy to ninety degrees. That can be very relaxing.

There are saunas and corner tubs being used all over the world. It is growing in popularity because of the promised effects it can have on a person’s health, weight, stress level, and comfort. It is easy and not time consuming to have sessions in a sauna. When needing warmth and relaxation, saunas are easily the top choice for people. Because it helps to promote weight loss, many people are getting into saunas after a workout. It can be the last minutes of exercising that helps wind down the mind and the body.

Athletes are using saunas everyday to repair or soothe torn or sore muscles and joints. For some people, saunas can be very therapeutic and necessary. Although they can have so many positive effects, the elderly, pregnant women, or children should be very cautious about spending a lot of time in saunas. With saunas becoming popular, people are seeing why they should invest in one. They promote healthy living and can create relaxation and soothing of the body.

Improved Odds at Online Casinos

There are several things to like about casino sites. They allow you to gamble and play games whenever you have a spare moment or two. You can gamble naked. You never have to worry about the cost of commuting to and from the casino. You can’t feel your fellow players eyes boring into you as you deliberate over your next move. However, one of the best things about online casinos is that your chances of winning are far greater than if you left home and went to a traditional casino.

The idea of improved odds at online casinos might seem ridiculous at first, but when you look more closely at the situation it quickly becomes very easy to see how they can offer far better odds than a traditional casino or bingo hall.

An online casino like Mr Green Casino has very little overhead. While a traditional casino has to worry about things like how they are going to pay the rent and maintain a building, the online casino only has to deal with the cost of a domain name. This is the first place where the online casino saves money.

If you have ever been inside of a traditional casino, it most likely came to your attention that there are a lot of people who work at the casino. Each of these people is someone that the casino has to pay. In addition to having to pay the employees, the traditional casino also has to consider employee benefits as well as liability insurance. The number of employees that the online casinos like caesarscasino needs is very minimal and some are able to get by without any, especially in the beginning before the casinos membership swells. The lack of salaries is another way that the online casino is able to improve the odds for their employers. They don’t have to worry about recouping their expenses, and they are able to pass their savings on to you.

If you aren’t crazy about traditional casino games, you should check out websites like titan casino. Since these websites offer cash prizes to the winners of their games, they are considered an online casino, but they provide players with more wholesome and family friendly game choices. Most of these types of fun online casinos have practice games that are free that allow you to familiarize yourself with the game before you start to play for cash stakes.

Online casinos like paddy power enjoy more frequent players than traditional casinos; the reason for this is easy to see. Members can play whenever and wherever they want means that the player can log into their account and play whenever they have a hankering. The increased amount of play time is yet another thing that allows the online casino to offer more impressive odds that favor you, the player.

Don’t just blindly sign up for an online casino, first you should take the time to do a bit of research and make sure that the casino is right for you.

A Miner Takes Control of His Health

I’ve been working in the coal mines for most of my life.  In fact, mining is in my blood.  It was my father’s job, my grandfather’s job, and my great-grandfather’s job.  Mining is what brought my great-great-grandfather to the United States in the first place.  He saw an opportunity and took it.  We’ve been running the mines in our mountainous area ever since.  While mining is my passion and I love what I do, I have recently had some health problems that are making it difficult to do my job.

A horrible cough started bothering me about a year ago and I just assumed it was from the damp chilly air in the mines.  My brother works with me and he seemed perfectly fine so I couldn’t understand why the cough wouldn’t go away.  Then my wife reminded me that it could be the smoking habit instead of the mining job that was giving me problems.  I’ve been smoking since I was 13 years old and it has never really bothered me.  But suddenly, I was scared that each drag was destroying my lungs as the cough gets worse by the week.

I started talking to my best friend about my problem one day while we were working the mines.  I explained how I was just terrified to quit smoking.  I knew the withdrawals would be awful and I just couldn’t stand the thought of giving up my smokes.  He suggested that I try electronic cigarettes as an alternative to traditional smoking.  I had never even heard of an electronic cigarette, but he explained the benefits and showed me where to find e-cigarette reviews.

There is no smoke when you are using Premium electronic cigarettes.  You can still get your nicotine fix and the sensation is the same.  The only difference is that it eliminates the poisonous smoke and releases a water based mist instead.  He told me his cousin has been using Premium electronic cigarettes for years.   He promised to talk to him and learn more.

The next day, his cousin emailed me with some links to help me learn more about the best e-cigarettes for my situation.  He sent me links to e cigarette reviews from half a dozen different companies.  He told me to pay special attention to the Green Smoke reviews, as well as the Safe Cig reviews and V2 cigs reviews.  He had friends that used all of these brands on a regular basis.

After reading those reviews, I emailed him back with some questions.  I was torn between Premium vs. Green Smoke and I just couldn’t decide which one to go with.  He wrote me back and recommended the Premium electronic cigarettes since they seemed to have more flavor options and nicotine strengths.  He also sent a V2 Cigs coupon code attached to the email in case I wanted to use it when I placed my order.

A week later, I made the final decision to buy e-cigarettes and give it a try.  I can say with confidence that it was the best choice I had made in a long time.  Within a week of switching to the e-cigs, my cough was starting to go away.  I still got the nicotine I needed during my day in the mines, but I wasn’t pausing every hour to double over in coughing fits.

Killing Time in a Small Town

I know that there are probably lots of kids my age who love their home towns. These kids would probably be horrified at the idea of spending a Friday night in front of the computer playing cash bingo online. I am sure that they live in a town where there is actually something to do. I do not. My entire life I have lived in the same town, a town whose entire economy revolves around the mining industry. There is nothing to do, except to watch the grass grow and play bingo online. There are days when I think that the only reason I don’t die of sheer boredom is because I play UK bingo.

One of the things that I have noticed is that since I started to play cash bingo online my grades have started to improve. I thought that this was a fluke, but I did a little research and discovered that all of the time that I have been spending playing on the best online bingo websites is actually making me a smarter person. Playing bingo bonus games is doing wonders to help my memory and it’s also improving my ability to notice little details.

As of right now I only play bingo as a means to pass the time. Since money is tight, I tend to seek out the free bingo bonus games, so that I don’t have to worry about blowing the little bit of money that I have set aside from college. Just because I do not participate in the cash bingo games that require me to pay an entry fee, it does not mean that I have not been able to win any money that I used to help put gas in my cars. Many of the games that I participate in have a really great cash prize, but lots of people participate in the free games and the larger the cash prize is, the more competitive the games get.

The thing that I really like about the best online bingo websites is that I never have to worry about not being able to play. Unlike every business in this town, all of which lock their doors at 6pm, the online bingo sites never close down. I can play my favorite games 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition to playing bingo, I have also been able to make new friends by taking advantage of the chat feature that the websites offer. Some of these sites are even starting to set up video chats.  Unless something drastic happens in my town, bingo is my only shot at a social life apart from the other mining families in our community.  In some ways, I’m kind of glad I live here because I probably never would’ve discovered that I love to play bingo online otherwise.

Try Your Hand at Arizona Gold Mining

Gold In ArizonaIf you have always been curious about the history of gold mining in America, it might be time for you to learn more with a firsthand experience.  Arizona was once the gold mining capital of America and today, you can still pan for gold in several places around the state.  Panning for gold is an exciting activity and it is really fun for all ages so even your kids can participate.  If you are interested in gold panning, here are a few things you need to know.

Know the Right Process

Panning for gold isn’t difficult, but you do need to understand how to do it effectively.  Basically you will need a flat plan to get started.  Many mining locations will give you a pan to use when you pay an entrance fee to their mining grounds.  You fill your pan with a small handful of dirt followed by a splash of water.  Begin to swirling the pan around to see if you can discover any small pieces of gold buried inside.  You can also do gold panning with a dry method where you simply shake the dirt around or filter it carefully without using any water.  Dry panning is most successful in Arizona because of the naturally dry ground.

Know the Right Places

When you start searching for gold, it is important that you visit the best locations so you have a real chance of discovery.  Some of the most lucrative places in Arizona include the Vulture Mine and the San Francisco District mines.  The Jerome District is the best place to try gold panning for the first time because it is the state’s number one gold producer today with a rich supply waiting to be found!

Know the Right Precautions

Gold panning is a lot of fun, but you need to be sure to protect yourself from environmental dangers.  Arizona’s hot climate can scorch you quickly so take plenty of water so you can stay hydrated.  You should also take a few energy bars or some trail mix to keep your energy high.  Gold panning often takes hours of patient searching before you ever discover anything exciting.  Wear sunscreen and wear sunglasses and a hat to keep from getting sunburned as you work.
